I tasted through many rugelach those small, rolled, filled pastries that are staples in a Jewish Hannukah celebration?and found the versions from this Connecticut company to be the best available by mail-order. Do keep in mind, however, that they deviate a bit from the rugelach norm. They are not typically crunchy and shatter-y when you get them; they are complicated and layered, but in a softer way, like a Greek galaktoboureko. However, if you heat them in a 350-degree oven for ten minutes, then let them cool, they become a lot more like crisp, traditional rugelach.
I selected them because they taste so damned good, particularly The Challah Connection Rugelach, Apple-Honey, which has a wonderful fruity sweetness, and a crackly sugar sprinkle on top. My second fave is The Challah Connection Rugelach, Raspberry, which has a great fruit preserve flavor. Also good are The Challah Connection Rugelach, Chocolate (which has a wonderful chocolate flavor with a kind of acidity to it), and The Challah Connection Rugelach, Cinnamon, which, though tasty, seemed a little drier than the others.
BEST STRATEGY FOR ACQUISITION. To order, log on to The Challah Connection web site. For single-flavor orders, contact the company via phone.
