Some of the best Jewish holiday gift basket ideas are born in my kitchen where I cook and bake all sorts of traditional Jewish recipes for my family. Recently, on a Friday, while I was shaping my challah for Rosh Hashana, I suddenly realized that – lost in thought – I was braiding, instead of twirling. "What are you talking about?” you might be thinking. Well, for the High Holidays- like Rosh Hashana, we eat round challah to signify the ongoing cycle of life instead of the braided version. So, I quickly rebounded and pulled the 3 strands apart and realized that ok, instead of one large round challah, I could make 3 small round ones. Let me tell you: that is my new favorite challah shape – small, round – and totally adorable!
Since we were going to our friend’s house for dinner, I placed one of the small challahs in a pretty white basket that has become my signature “shlepping” basket when I’m bringing holiday food gifts to friends. I added a platter of apple honey rugelach, some flowers, a bottle of wine and the book “Celebrating Jewish Holidays with The Challah Connection.” This was really a beautiful holiday gift basket – I was very proud of my achievement and my friends were so impressed too!
