The Jewish High Holidays, including Rosh Hashana (9/18) and Yom Kippur (9/27), is a time of renewal, happiness and reflection. To honor the "sweet New Year," some traditional favorites are fresh apples dipped in honey, and round challah, which symbolizes eternity. L'shana Tova!!--Challah Connection

Jewish High Holidays; Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur

Coming with the promise of cool fall days, the Jewish High Holidays are just ahead. Rosh Hashana, which begins at sundown on September 18, and Yom Kippur, September 27, are the most important holidays of the Jewish year. They combine times of great celebration with solemn contemplation, making them quite unique. During Rosh Hashana we celebrate the New Year and new beginnings, and on Yom Kippur we atone for our sins from the previous year and consider how to make the coming year better.

Lovely Traditions Abound
As the holiday nears we think of the wonderful traditions and customs that surround the High Holy Days, including the blowing of the shofar, tashlikh (the casting off of sins), fasting, holiday gift-giving and of course, holiday foods including apples and honey, to ensure a sweet New Year.

"My favorite Rosh Hashana tradition is our yearly family excursion to our local apple orchard for apple picking. We started this about 15 years ago when our boys were very young, but this is still something that we all love to do together. The apple sauce, pies and cakes that we then bake have an especially sweet and wonderful taste." says, Jane Moritz, Challah Connection Owner

Rosh Hashana Gift Giving

Rosh Hashana is a time of family, celebration and gift giving. Kosher gift baskets that feature items such as apples, honey, chocolates, challah and other sweet things are appropriate for the holiday. At Challah Connection, all of our Rosh Hashana baskets and gifts are created with holiday traditions in mind.

L’Shana Tova! In Hebrew, this means, have a sweet year!
