Like bread, it is often baked as a loaf and also uses yeast. However, it's also like cake, as it is considered a sweet dessert (any time of day!). Some compare babka dough to brioche—sweet and moist. Babka originated in Eastern Europe and was brought to the US by early immigrants who settled in NY's Lower East Side. It is a popular cake for Easter and is also very popular with Jewish people all year round. Babka had it's 15 minutes of fame when it was the focus of an episode of The Seinfeld Show.
